How To Prep Your Bicycle for Spring

March 7, 2022

Now that winter is almost gone, you may wonder, "How do I get my bike ready for spring?" It’s time to start preparing your bike now. Here is a handy checklist of things to do to get your bicycle ready for spring.

Do Some Cleaning

Spring bicycle maintenance should start with a good cleaning. It will help keep it running smoothly all season. A good wash will remove all the dirt and grime built up over the winter. Wash your frame, chain, and wheels — the whole thing. Use a mild soap and a soft brush to avoid scratching the paint.

Inspect Your Tires

Check for wear and tear. If your tires are looking bald, it’s time for new ones. The tires should look plump and have plenty of tread. If the tread is OK, but the tires look a bit deflated, fill them up with air before heading out on a ride.

Lube Your Brakes

If your brakes are squeaking, apply a light oil coating to the brake pads and braking surfaces. Use an oil specifically designed for bikes, not WD-40 or other household lubricants.

Check Your Gears

Ensure that all of your gears are working. If they’re not, take your bike to a local shop for repair.

Tighten Your Bike

Check all of the nuts and bolts on your bike to ensure they’re tight. This inspection should include the stem, handlebars, seat post, and pedals. Use a wrench to tighten any loose bolts.

Check Your Lights

If you ride your bike at night or in low-light conditions, it’s vital to have working lights. Check the batteries in your headlights and taillight to see if they need to be replaced. You may also want to consider adding additional lights for added safety.

Store Your Bike Correctly

When you’re not using your bike, store it in a dry place to avoid exposure to the elements. If you have a garage, that’s a good place to keep it. If you don’t have a garage, consider purchasing a bike storage rack.

Adjust Your Seat and Handlebars

If you’ve grown or shrunk over the winter months, now is the time to adjust your seat and handlebars to ensure a comfortable ride.

The seat should be at a height where your leg is slightly bent when your foot is on the pedal in the lowest position. The handlebars should be at a height where your arms are slightly bent when your hands are on the brake levers.

Prepare Your Clothing

Check your cycling clothes to see if they need replacing. If you’ve outgrown them or they’re looking worn, it’s time for new gear. Make sure you have a good pair of cycling shorts and a jersey that fits well.

In conclusion, you can ensure that your bicycle is ready to hit the road when spring arrives by following some simple steps. Get started now so that you will be ready once spring arrives.
