Bicycle Safety Tips

Bicycle Safety Tips

April 29, 2022

Owning a bicycle is exciting, and it will undoubtedly bring you joy. If you have kids, going for bike rides with them can be a great bonding activity. Besides this, bicycles make excellent toys for kids. However, whether it’s you or your kids riding, all of you must adhere to kids and bicycle safety practices. This minimizes the risk of accidents and reduces the risk of serious injury if accidents do happen. Here are ways to stay safe on a bike.

1. Wear a Helmet

Although you might not be required by your jurisdiction’s cycling regulations to always wear a helmet, it’s crucial that you do before you get on your bike. Make sure your kids have a helmet on when playing with their bikes. Don’t assume that because they’re in the yard there is no risk of an accident or a serious injury. The helmet you or your kids wear must fit the head properly and be strapped correctly to offer optimal protection.

2. Inspect the Bike’s Equipment Before Each Ride

In contrast to popular belief, most bicycle accidents aren’t actually caused by rider distraction or a road bump, but rather by malfunctioning bike equipment. You can prevent yourself and your kids from being victims of cycling accidents caused by malfunctions by inspecting the bike’s equipment. The first things to check are the brakes and bell.

3. Wear Reflective Materials

Always wear reflective materials like a reflective vest when riding your bike. This makes it easier for car drivers and other motorists to see you easily while cycling. Additionally, if your children ride bikes in the yard and your home is close to a road, make sure they have reflective vests. Children might easily get on the road without your noticing, even if you’re watching them.

4. Keep Your Hands on the Handlebar

After years of riding your bike, you can start to feel like it’s an extension of your body whenever you’re cycling. Thus, you start getting tempted to cycle without holding the bike’s handlebar. This is dangerous, as even riding over a small loose rock can throw your front wheel off-balance and lead to an accident. Always keep your hands on the handlebar while riding.

5. Limit Distractions

Cyclists can engage in numerous distractions, including listening to music while cycling. These distractions contribute to accidents that could have been avoided if the cyclists had been keen. Limit distractions while riding, because they rob you of the ability to make split-second decisions to avoid accidents.
