Why Bikes Are Essential to Society During a Crisis

April 21, 2020

Society is facing difficult times, and life as we know it has changed, at least for the foreseeable future. In the midst of the confusion, many people have found themselves in need of new types of entertainment, new ways of exercising and new forms of transportation in order to stay safe and keep their distance from crowds. In this crisis, getting a bike from your local bike shop in Naples, FL can be a great solution.

The current coronavirus pandemic is not the first time people have turned to bicycles to help them during a difficult time. After 9/11, New Yorkers turned to bicycles to help them get around. Transit strikes in major cities like Paris, Philadelphia and London found people seeking out bikes to make sure they could get to work. And after Hurricane Harvey destroyed cars in Houston, people used bikes to pick up much needed supplies or simply to get rid of stress.

An alternative mode of transportation

Now, much of the population is currently under orders to restrict the amount of time spent around large crowds. Public transportation has been limited, forcing many people to find a new way to get around. Besides walking, which can take too long for people who need to travel longer distances, biking is a great solution. It might be time to dust off the bike hiding in the back of your garage or finally figure out the bike share business in your neighborhood. If neither of these options works for you, search for your local bike shop in Naples, FL to find your new ride.

Besides using bikes as a way to get to and from work and the grocery store for essentials, biking can be a great source of entertainment after being cooped up in the house too long. Biking will help you maintain your distance from other people as you go around your neighborhood. When reading and watching TV is no longer cutting it for you or your kids, hop on your bike and explore your neighborhood. Make a scavenger hunt, looking for specific items to stay engaged and get your mind working along with your body.

Biking is a great source of stress relief and exercise as well. Most gyms have been closed as social distancing rules are in place, so many people are looking for a new way to keep moving. After a long day of working from home, hop on your bike for some exercise. Plan a new route every time to keep it interesting, and keep track of your distance. See if you can get faster as you get more comfortable on your bike.

If you are looking for a new or used bike to help you get through this crisis, check out Big Momma’s Bicycles, a bike shop serving Naples, FL and the surrounding area since 2005.
