Tips for Biking Through the Winter
October 27, 2021
When cooler weather comes around, some people place their bikes in storage. They’re done with trails and roadways until spring arrives.
Is that you? Or are you determined to keep up your hobby year-round? If you’d like to keep riding for fun in any season, or if you need some commuter cycling tips for winter, use the following winter riding tips for bicycling:
- Work your way up: If you are not used to riding in the winter, start out the season with shorter rides. Let yourself get used to any new conditions and any gear adjustments needed before you increase your distance.
- Stay visible: One of the main challenges of winter riding is less daylight. You may be sharing the roadways with vehicles at night or in early-morning dark hours. Make sure your bike has plenty of lighting and reflective components. Also wear clothing that is reflective. Upgrade your gear if necessary to stay visible while riding in the winter.
- Check your pressure: Cooler temperatures can affect tire pressure. Your tires may lose air more quickly in the winter. Be sure to check your tires before each ride for proper pressure, and reinflate as needed. This will help you avoid flat-tire situations. It will also prevent riding on too little pressure, which can damage your bike (and make the ride more difficult).
- Dress appropriately: If morning temperatures are in the 50s, but your afternoon ride home will see temperatures in the 70s, it can be a challenge to dress for the weather. For winter biking, dress in layers. This will allow you to adjust to weather conditions as they change throughout the winter day. Don’t forget other protective clothing such as rain gear, a bike helmet and gloves.
- Hydrate: With milder temperatures, it can be easy to become dehydrated in the winter. You might not be as hot or sweat as much, so you think you don’t need as much water—but it’s important to drink plenty of water in the winter, too. Always bring plenty of water with you when you ride, and take sips or drink-breaks often.
- Charge daily: If your bike features batteries or lights that require charging, don’t forget to charge them. Make it a habit to charge any electrical components on your bike each night, so you’re ready to face each winter day safely.
- Get a tune-up: Like a car or appliance, your bicycle needs regular maintenance to continue to operate optimally. Before you start your winter riding, consider taking it to a bike shop for a tune-up. The experts there will inspect all the components and make sure your bike is ready for the season, so you don’t break down on the trail.
