May Is National Bike Month!
There are a lot of things that are different this May, but one thing hasn’t changed: it’s still National Bike Month. The League of American Bicyclists established National Bike Month to celebrate cycling and encourage riders who use bicycles for exercise, recreation and commuting. No matter how often you ride your bike or how much experience you have as a cyclist, it’s still a great time to celebrate National Bike Month to stay healthy and active during shelter-in-place and social distancing measures.
National Bike Month 2020
Most years, the League of American Bicyclists encourages people to bike to work and go on bike rides with friends to promote the practice of bike riding for recreation and transportation. This year, National Bike Month is still on, but the League of American Bicyclists is taking a different approach to encourage social distancing and keep riders, pedestrians and drivers safe on the road. Instead of celebrating together at events and gatherings, cyclists are encouraged to get out on the road on their own and share their National Bike Month celebrations online via social media.
How to celebrate National Bike Month
If you’re not sure how to celebrate National Bike Month during COVID-19, consider some of these ideas and suggestions from the League of American Bicyclists:
- Share your ride on social media: Plan safe routes for yourself and post about your rides on social media with the hashtag #BikesUnite. Take a picture of yourself and tag your friends to encourage them to get outside on bike rides this month. Plan a route that takes you through your favorite local sites and challenge your friends to try out the same route and take pictures along the way. Social media offers unlimited opportunities to connect with other riders and encourage ridership among your friends.
- Participate in the National Bike Challenge: The League of American Bicyclists offers the National Bike Challenge to encourage riders to get out more often and log more miles. Participate in the challenge by logging your bike miles for the month of May and check out stats from other participants around the world.
- Get involved: If you’re passionate about cycling, there are lots of ways to get involved. Find out if there’s a local cycling organization in your community, and consider joining. Supporting local organizations helps encourage cycling in your community and promotes the improvement of access to biking resources and opportunities. Support local bike shops that offer sales, repairs and bike rentals in Naples, FL to keep local businesses strong.
